BBC_2_New

The podcast about new things made in response to books is here!  We have two episodes already.  The most recent features our latest performances and creations for AMERICANAH by Chimananda Ngozi Adichie for the mayor’s One Book, One New York initiative!  Listen on iTunes and Soundcloud!

Join BBC founder, Susan Hwang in her kitchen with songwriters, John S. Hall, Charlie Nieland, Jessie Kilguss, Krystal Hawes and Jennifer Devore for AMERICANAH-inspired cocktails and the cookie you don’t get for reducing racism.  The songwriters discuss their participation in the first One Book One NY initiative and the impact of AMERICANAH in their music and lives.  Enjoy songs from those at the kitchen table, plus performances from Karen Kuhl, Jim Flynn, Juliet Garrett, Janelle Lawrence, Annie McCain Engman, Terry Radigan, Swan Drsti and Iyvon Edebiri.  Kat Flannery‘s AMERICANAH-inspired painting is featured, but of course you can’t see it.

Hello again, goodbye.. 2016

Friday, December 9th, 2016

We’re letting go by playing it again and hearing something new.  We’re taking the spark of creations from this year and seeing how we can further it now, how they want to take shape now and what else of ourselves comes through the songs now.  We’re building now out of nothing and out of everything we got.  Come celebrate with us at the marvelous Issyra Gallery.  You’ll be immersed in an environment built from the hands, spirit and vision of artist, Issa Sow, plus the literature-inspired revelry of yours truly, Bushwick Book Club.  Plus, someone is making beef bourguignon.

June 18th – “Mapping Manhattan” at The Living Room

Tuesday, June 11th, 2013

We’re excited to present original music inspired by Becky Cooper’s new book Mapping Manhattan: A Love (And Sometimes Hate) Story in Maps by 75 New Yorkers.  It’s a collection of hand drawn maps of this city – each as different as the New Yorker that created it.  They are maps of lives lived and stories told–lamenting, celebrating, remembering.

Come hear the music inspired by these glimpses into our neighbors’ lives.  Show is Tuesday, June 18th, 8pm at The Living Room in the Lower East Side.  Songs by:

Hilary Downes, Toby King, Susan Hwang, Jessie Kilguss, Sweet Soubrette, spiritchild, Herb Scher, Dan and Rachel and Danydany.

This book choice was inspired by Maria Popova’s awesome blog to inspiration and all things interesting, Brainpickings.org.  If you click on the book there and buy it through Amazon, you help her out.  If you come hear the songs next Tuesday night, you help out your inner hunger for brand new, literature-inspired songs!  (That sound is your soul grumbling for songs about books.)
